Notting Hill Carnival

In Notting Hill, a suburb of London, each August Bank Holiday weekend there is the Notting Hill Carnival. It is a carribean celebration with a parade of floats, dancing, music and food. Over 2 days they were expecting around a million people to attend. In the past it has been marred by riots that have occured after the fact, and so when Rob and Lauretta got to London were warned to stay far away. PJ from my rotaract club had been talking about it for months so of course I had to go!!

I caught the train in from Welwyn with Anna, my housemate and Yenna her friend. There we met with Tricia, Murray and a few Rotaract buddies.

First, Anna Yenna and I ended up following along these teriffic drum players. We were dancing along to the beat. It was really cool as you could bop along knowing nobody would notice if you were out of time or anything. When they passed under a railway bridge it was even better as the sound was amplified and echoey. Anna is in red and yenna is in white-

The floats were pretty good too. Lots of crazy costumes and dancing. I also had some coconut straight from the coconut but its not very tasty.

.
I really had a great time and it was like nothing I had ever been to before. The weather was good too and quite warm (it was on the last day of summer).
